There isn''t one cannabis format that''s right for everyone. Understanding how the major product categories differ can make browsing a menu much easier.
Menus are usually organised by format first — flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles, concentrates — and each format has its own conventions for packaging, sizing and labelling. Once you know what each category looks like on a listing, comparing products becomes a lot less abstract.
Cannabis flower
Flower is the dried, cured plant material sold in packaged quantities. It is the most familiar category on most menus and usually the one with the widest range of strains.
On a listing you will typically see the package size, the brand, the strain name, and cannabinoid information such as THC and CBD percentages where the producer provides it. Sizes are the main variable: the same product often appears in more than one package size at different prices, which is why flower listings usually show a price range and a Choose Size option rather than a single price.
What to compare: strain, package size, cannabinoid information where listed, brand, and the product description. If a product has lab documentation attached, that is worth a look too.
Pre-rolls
Pre-rolls are cannabis flower already rolled and packaged by the producer. The appeal is convenience — there is no preparation involved, and the quantity per unit is stated on the package.
Pre-rolls are sold as singles or in multipacks depending on the product. A multipack listing will state how many are included and the weight of each, so read the quantity carefully when comparing prices between two products that look similar at a glance.
What to compare: number of units in the pack, the weight per unit, strain, and any product details the brand publishes.
Vapes
The vape category generally covers two formats: cartridges, which attach to a separate battery, and disposables, which arrive as a self-contained unit. Cartridges are sized by volume, and compatibility with your battery is worth confirming before buying.
Vape products come with manufacturer directions on the packaging, and those directions are the right reference for how a specific device is intended to be used, charged and stored. Product pages list format, size and brand information, but the packaging is always the authority for the item in your hand.
What to compare: format (cartridge or disposable), size, brand, strain where listed, and the information the product page provides.
Edibles
Edibles are cannabis products intended to be eaten — gummies are the most common format, though menus carry other types as well. They are packaged by piece count, with cannabinoid information stated per piece and per package.
This is the category where reading the label carefully matters most. Packages differ in how many pieces they contain and how much cannabinoid content each piece carries, and product experiences and onset can vary considerably from person to person and from product to product. We do not offer dosing advice — the product packaging and label are the reference, and if you are unsure, a licensed professional is the right person to ask.
What to compare: number of pieces, cannabinoid information per piece and per package, flavour or format, and brand.
Concentrates
Concentrates are cannabis products in concentrated form and come in a number of consistencies and preparations depending on how they are made. They are typically sold in small package sizes and are labelled with format, weight and cannabinoid information.
Because this category is the most varied in terminology, the product description and lab documentation are especially useful when comparing two items.
How do you choose?
A straightforward way to compare categories side by side:
| Product type | Common formats | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Flower | Packaged flower | Strain, size, cannabinoid information |
| Pre-Rolls | Singles, multipacks | Quantity, strain, product details |
| Vapes | Cartridges, disposables | Format, size, product information |
| Edibles | Gummies, other edibles | Pieces, package details, cannabinoid information |
| Concentrates | Various concentrate formats | Type, size, product details |
None of these categories is better than another — they are different formats with different packaging conventions. The practical difference when shopping is what you compare: size and strain for flower, unit count for pre-rolls and edibles, and format for vapes and concentrates.
If strain names are the part you find confusing, our guide to indica, sativa and hybrid labels covers what those terms do and do not tell you. You can also browse strain information directly.
